What does 'to smear on the grain' mean?
'Spreading on the grain' means that you apply the microcement - usually the base layer - in a thickness that is no thicker than the largest grain in the product. The grain in the microcement paste therefore determines the maximum layer thickness, which is approximately 0.7 mm.
How do I apply the grain?
Are you unsure whether you are using the right thickness? Apply the base coat in two thin scraping layers. This way you gradually build up the right layer thickness. In any case, make sure you do not apply too thickly: this extends the drying time and increases the chance that you do not have enough material for your project.
Always follow the mixing ratio, drying times and working method as described in the manual of your package.
What tools do you use?
Applying Microcement is best done with a flexible trowel. This ensures that you can spread thinly and in a controlled manner, with a sleek and industrial end result.
