What tools do you really need when applying microcement?
When applying Microcement, good tools are at least as important as the material itself. A smooth, even and professional result starts with the right tools. We will take you through the steps of a Microcement project and explain which tools are essential per phase.
Step 1: Preparation of the substrate
Before you start applying microcement the surface must be clean, dry and flat. Tools required:
- Roller set with foam roller: for applying the primer (step 1), and later also the PU coating
- Mortar mixer: for evenly mixing the mortar (if required) and the microcement and pigment
- Scoop (or trowel): for removing the products from the bucket in measured doses
Step 2: applying the Microcement
A flexible trowel is essential for applying the Microcement. In contrast to normal plaster trowels, this is a lot more flexible and therefore bends with the movement during application. This allows you to apply the Microcement in thin layers of 1-2 mm. This is crucial for the adhesion and appearance. We offer 2 variants:
- Flexible chipboard 25cm: standard in the tool set and essential
- Flexible trowel 6cm: for precision work in niches or thin edges.
Finishing the corners
For countertops or connecting walls you do not want an inaccurate finish of the corner, for this we have 2 corner chips available:
- Internal corner chip: for a corner where 2 shower walls meet, for example
- External corner chip: often used on countertops
Step 3: Presealer and PU Coating
To waterproof your work, first apply the supplied presealer (actually a primer for the PU Coating) with a sponge. Then apply the PU Coating in 2 or 3 layers with the same roller holder as for the primer (with a new roller).
